Celebrating Art in Harvard... How?
Some of the ways For Art's Sake has celebrated art in the community...






In the schools:
- Served as advisors to the Bromfield School National Arts Honor Society providing mentorship throughout the school year, creation and participation in induction ceremonies, and funding membership and student art show entrance fees.
- Provided opportunities for community service projects for art students such as curating and promoting exhibitions, creating student galleries, website work to help feature artists in the community and other special projects.
- Managed the For Art’s Sake Donna Sherman Scholarship for the Arts and awarded scholarship to a senior each year
- Developed and introduced a 6-week bookmaking series ‘Tiny Books; Giant Knowledge’ and Expo at the HES with third graders culminating in a display at the Harvard Public Library
- Funding art supplies for special art projects at the HES led by parent volunteers such as Mesopotamia projects.
- Contributed origami supplies and helping hands to the Middle School Ludo Festival world cultures event
- Chaperoned field trips to New York Museums (MoMA, Whitney and The Met) and provided passes to Fuller Museum for students and members
- Funded wish list items for teacher requests and unusual materials not covered by school budgets for special projects such as repousee tools and metal supplies, canvases, paints, colored pencils for still life and mandala projects
- Funding art supplies for special art projects at the HES led by parent volunteers such as Mesopotamia projects.
- Managed and stocked a booth at the Harvard Flea Market with proceeds going to the National Arts Honor Society
- Sponsored tee shirt exhibition and contest at the general store to encourage young artists to exhibit outside the school
- Maintained a website featuring a student gallery for student work from grades K-12
- Featured students as Artist of the Month within the community
- Collected and distributed recyclables for art projects throughout the year
- Provided recognition and encouragement for students and their teachers
- Supported parent volunteers for special projects and brought artists from community into classroom for demonstrations and workshops.
In the community:
- Built an on-line artist directory of local artists from and for the town
- Featured a local artist each month on the website and encourage artists to share their talent via our website, in the gallery, at the library, and in the schools
- Co-sponsored the Bluebird Puppet Theatre production of ‘Anonymous Nonsense’
- Sponsored a call to artists to design a globe and participate in a ‘350 Transform the Globe’ Exhibit in the winter of 2010 with funds going to the Bromfield Environmental Group for water filter project.
- Created a gallery area in the Harvard Public Library to feature local artists throughout the year
- Held first exhibition ‘Barn Raising of a Different Kind’ at library featuring work of Sue Fitterman, Sue Ginouves, Judy Warner and Colleen Payne.
- Created the exhibition ‘A Room with s View’ at Harvard Public Library featuring the work of Larry Malam, Pam Watson and Brigitte Desautels.
- Commissioned and helped coordinate new display panels for art exhibitions designed and built by Bromfield student Jack Landry
- Managed the Live Artist of the Month Gallery at the General Store where a new local artist is featured each month
- Sponsored the Annual Pumpkin Walk: ‘Lit on Mass’ on Halloween Night
- Helped to facilitate an Art Angel program with Daria Eckert to place artists’ work in life care/healing environments
- Created community Valentine-Making events and exhibits and sales with proceeds going to the FAS Donna Sherman Art Scholarship Program
- Participated in town forums on building use of Old Library advocating a place to display art and offer classes to the community
- Sponsored photography exhibtion 'Hidden Harvard' at the old library featuring local photographers of all ages.
- Continue to offer free posting of art classes, workshops, exhibitions and art, literary and performance events on the site
- Hosted and attended local artist receptions and gallery talks by artists in the directory
- Funded fibers workshop on 'Textile of Bhutan' with fiber artist Cameron Taylor Brown through the Fiber Loft
- Sponsored artists walks and outdoor sculpture events
- Provided local artists with innovative recyclables materials
- Fostered discussions with artists on what they would like to see next such as a community art space and a mobile project in the library
- Encouraged artists to take next steps to exhibit work
- Worked with teachers about possible integrated art/curricular development
- Held monthly meetings open to all members of the community to help FAS create new and expanded projects
- Continued to connect artists with artists and other members of the community
