Artist Directory: Victoria McPhee

Victoria McPhee, a 2008 graduate of the Bromfield School, confides, "the most important parts of her life are my camera (how I see my world), my car (how I travel the world), and my friends (the people who make my world beautiful)." She is proud to be a vibrant, steadfast student, and although she has diverse interests ranging from running to French to calculus, she says "photography is the core of all these interests, and continues to be the force holding my life together."

Vicky became interested in photography, she explains "essentially because it was a way that I could produce something meaningful for myself and by myself. I have been completely self-motivated, from saving up money to buy cameras and supplies, to working for hours on end to get one picture just right. I strive to incorporate art and photography into every aspect of my life, as well as continue working each day on a new, or old, picture." Her portfolio is a combination of inspiration, composition, color, and time. She says, "I am greatly inspired by the relationships I have to people around me, and my portfolio reflects this. My artwork is a product of my emotions and feelings, and these emotions are fueled by the people to which I am connected. To create an image, I spend a long time focusing on setting up a photograph, as well as figuring out how to portray a concept or idea. I believe that my portfolio shows my strong sense of conceptualization, color, and organization."

"When others look at my work, I hope it evokes some sort of emotion or memory they weren't expecting to encounter. Although my work isn't controversial, I still would love to spark conversation among others through my concepts and designs. With my photography, I would rather that the viewer forms their own opinion or idea about what the image portrays, as opposed to having the meaning and content forced upon them. While I understand the importance of the relationship between the photographer and the audience, I feel that it is more significant if the viewer connects to my art in their own way, making the picture part of their own experience."

Vicky plans to pursue art and photography both at Bard College and in her future career, as she is extremely interested in both the fine art and commercial uses for the visual arts. One of her goals and dreams is to curate a museum show of both my own and other artists' work. She is also very interested in providing art to students and children living in places where they are not exposed to or encouraged to learn about the arts, because she believes in the importance of introducing the visual arts to all students. Vicky shares, "I have experienced how art changed my life, and I would love to help that happen for others."

Vicky was a recipient of the Donna Sherman Scholarship For The Arts and also volunteered many hours of community service in helping run the For Art's Sake First Community Exhibition in the old Bromfield Library. We know she'll have continued success and is an inspiration to all of us who have both worked with her and been moved by her beautiful work.
