Artist Directory: Greta Minervini

Greta Minervini majored in fine arts concentrating on paintings and ceramics.  She later studied graphic design at the Boston Museum School and the Massachusetts College of Art, after which she worked as a graphic artist in publishing, advertising and at an audio-visual firm.  Greta also worked as a technical illustrator for computer firms both in Boston and Colorado.

While living in Munich, Germany for three years, Greta was an art director for a magazine and took her first watercolor class.  One of her paintings was published on the cover of a German art textbook.  After moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico, Greta worked as a designer in a clothing firm. Returning to Boston, and after the arrival of her two children, Greta took a class in the art of handmade paper and went on to sell her creations. With her children growing, Greta returned to her original love--graphic design, working in design and layout for a newspaper.

It was at a local Harvard fund raiser that Greta volunteered to help with design and was called on to decorate a chair. She used some of the antique items she had collected over the years, mostly sculptural farm tools and wooden items with their original graphics.  With no carpentry experience, she went on to construct two chairs from scratch. Greta continues to make sculpture and furniture consisting of wood, metal and found objects, often evoking a rural history.  Her most recent exhibits include the June 2007 Harvard House Tour and Artisan Show and the September 2007 Clark Gallery Outdoor Sculpture Show. Although a class in carpentry remains on her to-do list, she is busy making her creative furniture and sculpture, and has added custom work sculptural house number markers.

When asked about her future projects, Greta sees her work as always in transition, just as her life has been a collection of cross-country adventures. She consistently has sources of inspiration and projects in the works. Greta also has been has taught art classes in the community and in her son’s school.
